Since Grenfell there has been lots of attention on how fire risk is controlled when developers and others apply for permission for building or refurbishment. RTPI has put together this short briefing to clarify who is responsible for what in England.
After the Grenfell Tower fire there were major questions across the construction and built environment professions about how to prevent a disaster like this occurring again. In addition to supporting the Construction Industry Council in responses the Official Inquiry and the Hackitt Inquiry, RTPI researched and published two documents on the role of planning in fire safety.
Responsibility for fire safety during the development application process in England
The first of these considers the respective roles on planning, building control and the fire service, aiming to make it clear which roles each has in the process. Click here to download.
Improving Fire Safety in Development Management
We also published a position paper on 'Improving fire safety in development management', which considered some of the potential improvements we identified in our research or that were raised by members. Click here to download.
