Research on planning for housing

This edition of Planning Research Matters brings together research on housing - how it is being delivered, why many places are failing to meet their housing need, and how this situation could be improved.

One project looks at the return of local authority direct provision of housing in England, and another explores housing affordability in the South West of England.

We include a report on why UK volume housebuilders have been so profitable, which won the Academic Award at the 2024 RTPI Awards for Research Excellence.

We also include an Interface issue from the RTPI’s Planning Theory and Practice journal on community-led housing.

This edition follows the November 2024 publication of The Location of Development 4, the latest in the longstanding RTPI research series on the spatial relationship between housing development and key amenities.
