The RTPI responds to the Chancellor’s speech on her plans to grow the economy:
Victoria Hills, Chief Executive of the RTPI, said:
On the need to accelerate the planning system:
Our members operate in a system established by Government and will adapt to reforms aiming to speed up the system. The RTPI has long been championing for better resources in planning and to raise the public’s awareness of the issue.
We urge Government to invest in the planning system through a long-term, dedicated and comprehensive skills and resource strategy. This will enable our members to support delivery of the affordable homes, public services, and critical infrastructure our communities need.
Alongside this, we would strongly argue that local planning authorities need to have a statutory chief planning officer with the authority and professional expertise to oversee and ensure the proper delivery of the Government’s proposed reforms in the coming months.
On opening up the planning system to build new infrastructure:
“Efficient infrastructure delivery is key to economic growth, improving transport connectivity and achieving climate goals. It is positive that the Government is committed to reducing delays in major infrastructure delivery. We will continue to work with the Government to deliver a system that works for communities, nature and the economy.
