Professor Tony Crook CBE FRTPI, RTPI Trustee, passes away

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) has announced the passing of Professor Tony Crook CBE FRTPI, a respected trustee, long-time member, and influential figure within the planning profession.

At the time of his passing, Tony was serving as a trustee of the RTPI and chair of its Education and Lifelong Learning Committee. He was also a distinguished recipient of the Sir Peter Hall Award, the RTPI’s highest research honour, which he won twice.

Tony was first elected to the Trustee Board in 2014, serving as a Chartered Trustee continuously until stepping down in 2021 in line with the Institute's six-year service rule.

Tony, a member of the RTPI since 1965, was involved extensively in the Institute. During his tenure, he made an indelible impact, chairing and serving on numerous standing committees, including the Nomination Committee, the Policy, Practice and Research Committee, and the Membership and Ethics Committee. At the time of his passing, he chaired the Governance Group and served as Vice Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee. His dedication to advancing the profession and supporting the RTPI’s work was a hallmark of his career.

Tony’s exceptional contributions to housing and charity governance were recognised in 2014 when he was awarded a CBE. He was also a Fellow of the RTPI (elected in 2001) and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (elected in 2004). In 2021, the RTPI awarded him its Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his long-standing commitment to the Institute and the profession.

Tony Crook’s legacy will be remembered for his tireless work in shaping the future of planning, education, and research.

His contribution is immeasurable and has had a profound and lasting impact, helping to shape the future of planning education and research, and will continue to do so into the future”.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Tony will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of working with him.

“On a personal note, Tony was a great support to me when I was elected to chair of the board of the RTPI. His experience and advice was invaluable, and always delivered with kindness, positivity and above all good humour. I will miss him very much, as will the rest of the board.”
