New Fellow elected for role in championing inclusivity and diversity in planning

The Royal Town Planning Institute would like to congratulate Abraham Laker on being elected Fellow of the Institute.

Chartered Fellow is the highest professional membership grade offered by the RTPI and is only awarded to chartered members who have made a major personal contribution to the planning profession for the benefit of the public. Under the provisions of the Royal Charter, he is now entitled to use the designatory letters FRTPI.

Abraham is a Senior Associate at Rapleys with over 10 years’ experience in town planning. He has been particularly recognised for his work co-founding the BAME Planners Network and his role in championing inclusivity and diversity at all levels of the profession. As a result of this work he was given the President’s Special Award for Planning Achievement in 2020.

Abraham said: “It is a real honour to be elected as a Fellow and recognised for my professional achievements alongside my engagement and work with the BAME Planners Network to champion diversity and inclusivity within the planning sector.

"I hope being a Fellow inspires younger people, and especially those from ethnic minorities, to consider town planning as a successful career choice."

"Being an elected Chartered Fellow further motivates me to continue my commitment to championing diversity and inclusivity within the institution and the wider built environment.

"I hope being a Fellow inspires younger people and especially those from ethnic minorities, to consider town planning as a successful career choice and enter a profession that can directly influence their built and natural environments.

"In my view, it is the duty of all chartered members of the RTPI to impart their professional knowledge and technical abilities to the next generation of planners. This sharing of knowledge will ensure that future planners are equipped with the skill set to tackle social and economic injustices, climate change, conservation and public health and wellbeing.”
