Former RTPI President elected President of European Council of Spatial Planners

The European Council of Spatial Planners – Conseil Européen des Urbanistes (ECTP-CEU) has elected Janet Askew MRTPI as its new President.

Janet previously served as RTPI President between 2015-2016 and was previously Vice-President of the ECTP-CEU.

The ECTP-CEU was founded in 1985 and brings together 28 professional planning associations and institutes and their members from 24 European countries.

Commenting on her appointment, Janet said: “I am delighted to have been elected to be the President of the European Council of Spatial Planners (ECTP-CEU). It is a great honour for the RTPI to hold the presidency. Over 40 years ago, the RTPI was a founding member in setting up the ECTP-CEU to represent planners across the 47 countries of the Council of Europe.

“Together, we aim to define the distinctive role of the professional planner and achieve parity for planners across Europe. We believe that planners are central to the world’s efforts to achieve social and environmental justice, and that we have a crucial role to play in planning to mitigate climate change impacts and implement post-Covid recovery plans.

“Together with members across Europe, the ECTP-CEU seeks to work with governments and others to use planning as a progressive force to create more sustainable, resilient and socially just places.”
