RTPI's career development mentoring programme

Registration for mentors is now open. Registration for mentees opens on 2 April.

Following the successful pilot of the mid-career mentoring programme, the RTPI is launching an online mentoring platform available to all members, anywhere in the world.

The first mentoring programme to launch focuses on general career development for all members, regardless of your career stage. This programme connects planners allowing you to share knowledge, skills and experience to help each other advance in your careers, transition into new areas, or navigate specific challenges. Matches are based on needs of the mentee and experience of the mentor.

“Having a mentor has been a fantastic opportunity for me to think about my future practice as a town planner. Having a guide and mentor to help me grow and reflect has been a big part of my progression professionally this year.”

Registration for mentors is now open. Registration for mentees opens on 2 April.

Mentoring has the potential to be a powerful professional and career development tool. It is a reciprocal partnership between two people, based upon mutual trust and respect, and a learning and development opportunity for both parties. Depending on your own learning and development goals, mentoring can contribute to your CPD hours.

All RTPI members, both in the UK and internationally, are welcome to join as mentors or mentees. To participate, all you need is a commitment to the mentoring process, a bit of your time, and a constructive, open, and honest approach. You’ll be asked to agree to the  mentoring agreement between mentor and mentee when you create your profile.

The platform provides a range of resources to support both mentors and mentees through the mentoring journey. To decide whether mentoring is right for you, there are resources available on the mentoring platform before you register, these include:

  • What is mentoring and how can it be of benefit?
  • Are you ready to be a mentor?
  • Are you ready to benefit from having a mentor?
  • Keys skills of a mentor and mentor expectations
  • How does the mentoring process work?

Registration for mentors is now open. Registration for mentees opens on 2 April.

Ready to get started?

The programme will commence in February with the first phase being an invitation to members to registered as mentors. Following this we will welcome members to register as mentees.

Once launched the platform will have features including:

  • Introductory videos and guidance to help you make the most of your mentoring experience.
  • Help to identify your goals: Consider the areas you’d like to focus on, whether you're seeking support as a mentee or offering guidance as a mentor.
  • Creating your profile: When ready, create your mentor or mentee profile. This information will be used to match mentors and mentees based on shared interests and expertise.
  • Editing anytime: You can update your profile as often as you like. Tools are available within the system to help mentees refine their goals along the way.
