Qualifications:
- MSc in Spatial Planning at University College London (UCL)
My career:
I completed my undergraduate degree in Human Geography at the University of Edinburgh in 2016 before working for a few years abroad for an educational charity in Hong Kong. However, I knew that I eventually wanted to return to the UK to undertake a master’s, building on some of the themes I had studied previously and a period of work experience with Deacon and Jones. I decided to enrol in the Spatial Planning course at UCL with a view to pursuing a career in the built environment. After graduating I began working for the London Borough of Redbridge in the Development Management team. I have since progressed to a senior planner role and have gained some invaluable experience working on a wide range of commercial and residential applications. This position has also included responsibilities such as defending recommendations at planning committee and hosting pre-application advice meetings, opportunities that have developed confidence and a host of soft skills.
APC tips
-
I feel the key to success with the APC is the reflective journal. If you can bear the key competencies in mind when undertaking your professional role, it allows you to identify useful examples and case studies as you go along. Some light reflection little and often makes the whole process much more approachable when it comes to attempting the various written elements. Your experience will be fairly unique and by getting into the right mindset as you begin to think about it, you will have a much better idea of how many case studies you are likely to need and which examples are likely to be most useful.

I would also emphasise the need to use the resources provided. The task can seem daunting, but the instructions in the guidance are clear. When writing your various sections, signpost the language and competencies you are analysing. This not only makes it easier for you to check you have met the requirements but will add clarity to your writing to those assessing it.
