Policy Consultations
With the help of our active Policy and Research Forum we responded to the following consultations:
- Northern Ireland Blue Carbon Action Plan
- Review of the Marine Protected Areas Strategy
- Executive consultation on its Programme for Government
NI Planning Consultants Forum
We held our inaugural Consultants Forum meeting on 2nd September. We held the second one held in November and had NI Water in attendance.
Interim Regional Planning Commission
We continue to provide Secretariat for the Interim Regional Planning Commission and in 2024 attended 6 meetings

We participate in various advisory groups to promote planning issues. During 2024, these have included:

Events
In April we held the Climate Change Targets and Implications on Planning Policies webinar where speakers offered their views on the Climate Change Act (NI), its targets and what that means for planning/development proposals and planning policies.
Delegates heard from John Early DAERA, Michelle Hill RSPB NI, Tamasin Fraser RenewableNI and Dermot O'Kane Belfast City Council
In September we held the Northern Ireland Annual Conference, sponsored by Gravis Planning looking at Positivity about Planning. Following the Public Accounts Committee and NI Audit Office reports and the outcome of our Big Conversation NI survey this conference was designed to explore the issues, impacts, causes and potential solutions to support the profession by confident in their roles and deliver the planning system. The afternoon saw a Resilience for Planners Well-being session.
And finally, wrapping up the year we had the Annual Planning Law webinar in November sponsored by FTB with Gregory Jones KC, Conor Fegan Barrister both from FTB, Pamela O'Donnell Deputy Chief Commissioner and Mark Watson Principal Commission both from Planning Appeals Commission and Andrew Ryan, Partner TLT Solicitors
Northern Ireland Young Planners
The Young Planners NI Committee met on a number of occasions to discuss potential events. They held a social event in June and a webinar exploring what the RTPI can do for you in April.

PlaNIt
One edition of the RTPI NI journal plaNIt was published in 2024 and distributed online. We have also sent members more regular updates in our e-plaNIt bulletin.

School Engagement
- The BALANCE project, which provides new material to promote planning as a profession in schools, was launched at the General Assembly on 16th October.
- Materials have been prepared for 7-11 year olds and for 11-14 year olds.
- Call for ambassadors to volunteer to take this material into local schools, ideally focusing on areas with more diverse or deprived communities.
