RTPI Cymru Award for Planning Excellence 2022 winner

WINNER: South Point School, Rhoose (Vale of Glamorgan Council)

South Point Primary School is a project which aimed to deliver the first net zero carbon school in Wales and provide a model for future developments to use and build upon to achieve the national objectives in response to the climate emergency. The project was a collaborative venture between Welsh Government, Vale of Glamorgan Council, Taylor Wimpey, Aecom, ISG, Stride Treglown and McCanns & Partners. The project has provided a high-quality education environment, as part of a mixed-use development secured through the planning process. This has been achieved through a strong vision and collaboratively working with stakeholders.

The judging panel said "An excellent example of partnership working with planning playing a crucial role in project management from inception to delivery. The project design went beyond the 21st Century School requirements and incorporated access by active travel and a SuDS area and biodiversity embedded in the site. The Team are continuing to use learning from this project to inform further schemes".

"Thank you RTPI Cymru for awarding South Point Primary School with the Planning Excellence award for 2022. The development represents a collaborative project that included both the private and public sector in delivering the first net zero school in Wales. The award is a great achievement for all those involved, from the project team to the Vale of Glamorgan Council's Section 106 officer who was essential in securing the education site. Planning played an integral role in the project's location, design, and delivery ensuring the scheme resulted in a sustainable form of development for today and future generations to come."
