The judging process

The RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence has 15 national award categories. Entries in Wales are initially judged across 11 categories and awarded as:

  • Best Plan
  • Best Project
  • Planning Authority of the Year
  • Small Planning Consultancy of the Year

These winners become national finalists.

The shortlisted entries are put through for judging in the national awards and will be judged against the others in their selected categories for the national finalist list. The remaining four direct to national categories are also judged to complete the national finalist list of 15 categories. The winners and commendations are announced at the national ceremony in November .

*All Young Planner of the Year winners will be entered into the national shortlist and will be judged by the national judges and the top five will become national finalists.

"Winning the RTPI Cymru Excellence in Planning for a Successful Economy award in 2024 for the Cardiff University Spark|Sbarc project was a great achievement for DPP. The recognition not only highlighted our work but also opened doors, such as the opportunity to host the RTPI president for a tour and showcase the building’s significance. It’s important to take a step back, celebrate our contributions, and share the impact of projects we help bring to life. The awards process offers a fantastic platform to do just that."

Tom Molyneux-Wright, DPP Planning

"We were thrilled to have been recognised for excellence in our plan-making work  for the Wrexham Digital Place Plan and to represent Wales at the UK finals of the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence. Showcasing our expertise on a national stage was an incredible bonus. While we weren’t sure how our innovative digital placemaking would be received, we’re so glad we took the time to submit – it’s been a fantastic experience and a real testament to the value of the RTPI awards."
