Climate change poses an existential threat across the planet and it will take collective, global efforts to address the challenge. However, while there are clear reasons to be concerned, we can all work collaboratively to foster new opportunities, innovative ideas and groundbreaking technologies,
to shape a more resilient world whilst meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Planners play a key role in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They are in a unique position to bring together the knowledge of the built environment disciplines and deliver this know-how through innovative, nature and place-based solutions. Planners are vital in mediating between policy and decision makers, developers, and communities. This may take place in urban contexts, in the intricate cities of developed economies or the rapidly expanding cities of the Global South, as well as suburban or rural contexts. The case study examples in this document show this, through the lens of availability and access to clean water and the many challenges we face in delivering this goal.
Our case studies show that planners can think globally while acting locally, imbedding the principles of sustainable development in their thinking and practice, helping build better outcomes for the communities they serve. Our institute represents more than 27,000 planning professionals and students in over 80 countries worldwide. We are proud to see the positive impact that our members and planners beyond our Institute have in tackling climate
change and the related water challenges it presents. Alongside addressing these challenges, our planners are also creating sustainable and beautiful places around the world.
Planning is truly global, and the RTPI is the global home of professional planners.
