The Improvement Service with the support of RTPI Scotland and A&DS are delivering a free in-person GIS training session aimed at planners and planning technicians who would like to grow their GIS skillset in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
The training will take a tutorial format where students follow along with the course lead to complete GIS and data exercises, with a second course coordinator circulating the room to offer additional support.
The training will be held on the 26th of March 2025 at the Edinburgh Futures Institute with the following agenda:
- Welcome tea and coffee from 9:45am – 10:15am
- First session - the morning will cover examples of what can be achieved with GIS software, data basics and GIS basics using common datasets used by planners and planning technicians.
- Lunch will be served at 1pm.
- Second session - the afternoon session will cover data wrangling and how to make a map in ArcGIS Pro and in ArcGIS Online.
- Third session - the final session will cover how to make a StoryMap in ArcGIS Online.
- The training will end at 5pm
This training is aimed at those with a basic knowledge of GIS who would like a planning themed introduction to the software. It will not cover Python, Model Builder, or complex Spatial Analysis. A separate technical guide and webinar will be available in due course covering how to complete the spatial analysis that underpins 20-minute neighbourhoods.

We expect that this training will fill up quickly. If you are unable to book because places are full, please contact [email protected] to be added to a waiting list.
A second training will be held in Autumn 2025.
