Training Goal
The UK is still in the early stage of the energy transition, which will ultimately transform our landscapes, places and infrastructure. But without a plan-led approach, renewable energy infrastructure will happen to places with limited control over location or integration with other forms of development. The key commercial determinant in locating renewable energy projects is the availability of capacity on the electricity grid and these locations do not necessarily align well with wider planning criteria. Delivering the Government’s housebuilding targets and growth in their 5 priority economic sectors (laboratories, giga factories, data centres, digital infrastructure, freight and logistics) is dependent on securing energy infrastructure in the right place and in a timely way, so there needs to be greater coordination between these sectors – plan-making is a key means to achieve this. There is some planning specific guidance on what criteria could determine a suitable area, but there is no standard methodology and sources are often disparate. This short CPD training will help attendees to understand how to make identifying suitable areas and site allocations for renewable energy more planning led, considering the relationship between energy supply, housing and economic growth.
Target audience
This CPD training content is designed for experienced professionals in leadership roles working in England and Wales UK. Heads of planning, policy leads and planning policy officers at a senior and commissioning level. Economic and housing policy and infrastructure leads. Local authorities, LEPs and Combined Authorities. Potentially also development management officers. Unlikely to be suitable for planning consultants.
Training outcomes:
- By the end of this webinar, Learners will gain better understanding of how the key technologies are changing; the ancillary and grid infrastructure; and the key interrelationships between the energy, housing and economic sectors.
- From the case study examples presented, Learners will see the typical issues emerging and its implications on choosing areas and sites for renewable energy (in the context of changing policy and current Government priorities)
- Delegates will know what they need to consider when preparing methodologies for evidence bases, including what specialist support may needed for technical aspects of identifying sites, identifying key challenges, and how to translate evidence into sound and implementable policy.
Masterclass is delivered by a Trainer expert in the field
