Masterclass aim
Development Management has become increasingly complex over the last 10 years. Planning officers have to analyse, synthesise and understand vast amounts of information in a short space of time, which can be overwhelming.
This masterclass will develop your knowledge of the system and introduce you to the tools available, so you will be able to identify problems and find solutions in a more efficient and effective way.
This masterclass is designed for people who are:
- New to Development Management planning (DM planning)
- Moving from tech support to having a case load of your own
- Starting their first job at a Local Authority planning department
- Returning to work in DM planning
- Experienced planners from different roles who want to boost their DM knowledge and skills in public sector context
Learning objectives
- Review critical issues of Development Management (including a gentle introduction to Community Infrastructure Levy; minimising the risk of Judicial Review and different approaches to making decisions)
- Explore Development Management processes
- Identify tools and tricks you could use to reduce the feeling of overwhelm
- Reflect on how and why we do what we do
- Develop you decision making skills, so you can process planning applications efficiently and with more confidence
CPD Masterclass structure and delivery
This masterclass is delivered in two parts. You will start with the Self-guided Learning which consists of Trainer’s video presentations and exercises on the RTPI Learn platform. This flexible learning prepares you for the Online Workshop with your Trainer to address your questions and, for the small group activities and discussion with your peers. The Self-guided Learning section will take approximately 4 hours to complete. The Joining Instructions and your Enrolment Key will be sent on the day the Self-guided Learning part of the masterclass is scheduled to open.
- 17 April 2025 - Self-guided Learning opens for you from this date
- 3 June 2025 - Online Workshop (14:00 to 16:30)
Masterclass is delivered by a Trainer expert in the field.

- RTPI Members have to log into their RTPI account to make the booking
- Booking for non-members can be done as a group booking by their administrators
