Event Description
Affordability in rural areas is worsening, with high property values, increased aspirations to live in the countryside and limited development of new homes meaning many local households are now unable to find a home they can afford and remain within the rural community where they have grown up or where they work. Not only is this evident within our rural village communities but also the agricultural communities, where the cost of agricultural land and rural housing is at record levels, becoming prohibitively expensive for most new entrants to agriculture.
The provision of affordable housing can therefore have a transformative impact on individual lives and communal vitality, being an effective economic stimulus to support rural regions to thrive.
How can we encourage a planning system which actively encourages sustainable, low impact and affordable homes, and enables growth in rural areas?
Speakers:
- Nick Hughes from English Rural Housing Association will set out the need for, and challenges of, delivering rural affordable housing and the work they do as a top provider of affordable housing options in rural communities.
- Aaron Smith from Master Land and Planning will discuss how planning policy supports (or not) the delivery of housing across our rural countryside and what can be done to better support the delivery of homes to meet local needs.
- Sandra Tuck from the Ecological Land Corporation will cover housing for our agricultural communities, the essential need and functional tests for rural workers dwellings and their work to build more sustainable rural livelihoods by securing planning for low-impact dwellings as part of a move to ecological agriculture.
- Chaired by Hollie Sturgess, Senior Planner at Master Land and Planning and Chair of RTPI Wiltshire Young Planners
The presentations will be followed by a Q+A session with our panellists.
