Event Description

The East of England Young Planners Committee is continuing its Renewable Energy theme for 2024 by offering a walking tour of an operational Energy from Waste Facility.

The 20-megawatt facility, managed by SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK on behalf of Suffolk County Council, has been in operation since 2014. It currently handles waste from Suffolk that cannot be recycled. The facility has received numerous architecture awards and boasts a BREEAM 'outstanding' rating, a distinction achieved by less than 2% of the two million buildings assessed.

Clothing requirements: To enter the facility, all participants must wear full-length trousers and closed shoes (trainers or walking boots). Anyone failing to comply will not be permitted on the tour.

Learning outcomes

Participants will gain insights into the practical aspects of renewable energy generation and waste management. They will learn about the operational processes and technologies involved in converting waste into energy and the environmental and sustainability benefits of such facilities. Additionally, attendees can expect to understand the role of local authorities and private organisations in managing waste and promoting renewable energy initiatives.
