Come join RTPI Kent Young Planners an interesting afternoon tour around Gallaghers Hermitage Quarry giving an insight into the use of materials, where they come from, how they are extracted and how these can be used in wide range of developments.

Please note that this event is open to all members and non-members so you do not need to be a Young Planner to join this event.

This event offers the chance for planners to visit a working quarry and get up close to the raw materials.

The event will begin with a working lunch providing an introduction to Kentish Ragstone in the training room at Hermitage Quarry before undertaking a tour of the quarry with an emphasis on the workings in the Masonry department as well as processing secondary aggregates. This will be followed by a further discussion and a Q/A session over tea and coffee with a site visit to the residential development to the east of Hermitage Quarry which demonstrates how the Kentish Ragstone can be used to improve and enhance developments.

Hermitage Quarry, near to J5 of the M20 in Maidstone, is one of the last two remaining Kentish Ragstone quarries. It has the capability to produce in excess of 2 million tonnes of aggregates per annum, which are processed into more than 100 different construction materials.

A modern recycling facility at Hermitage Quarry also processes waste into a range of recycled aggregates. Inert waste that cannot be recycled is used to fill the void left by quarrying.
