Climate Justice Implications of Planning Responses to Urban Heat Islands: London and Berlin

Research Description
The research investigated the extent to which climate justice implications are addressed as part of planning responses to Urban Heat Islands in Berlin and London. Key literature reviews, policy analyses of planning documents and outcomes, and thematic analysis of superordinate planning documents revealed a lack of consideration of climate justice aspects through formal planning processes in both cities, while in London, the UHI itself was only scantly addressed - despite strong coverage on a superordinate policy basis. These findings indicate a need for continued and deliberate mainstreaming of climate justice in planning and stronger congruity between planning policies and outcomes regarding UHIs.

This submission made a clear demonstration between urban heat island effects and climate justice. A clearly expressed and systematically researched topic which assessed policy and practice. With dissemination of findings already creating discussion and exchanges, this was worthy of a highly commended status in further highlighting the importance and urgency for us to consider the impacts of the findings.
