Why plan

Town planning is a profession that decides how land should be used or protected. Find out how planning has always helped tackle climate change, social justice and public health.

What a town planner does

Planners organise, design and make decisions on where new homes, roads, schools, shops and all the other things we need to live and work should be built.  At the same time, town planners try to make towns, cities and the countryside attractive, safe and environment friendly. They are at the heart of discussions with local communities, businesses and politicians.

What to study

Town planning has one of the highest employability ratings. There are a number of different ways to get into the profession and learn the skills you need to succeed in this exciting and ever changing career.

Planning can be a very technical process but it touches people's lives. You need to be able to speak and write, and have conversations, in ways that make it accessible to everyone.  Rosie, Chartered Town Planner
