If the number of nominations for a position exceed the number of positions available, an election will take place. You can check which members are eligible to vote for each position. Elections will open on Monday 19 August and close on Monday 16 September. Please look out for an email from our election provider, Mi-Voice with details of how to cast your vote.

- Nations Trustee (a Chartered Member who lives or works mainly in Ireland, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland)

General Assembly is the debating chamber for RTPI. The General Assembly provides a forum for debate about the development of planning policy and practice, the corporate policy of the Chartered Institute and other issues relevant to the objects of the Chartered Institute. Each year, the Assembly elects’ members of the Board of Trustees.

The General Assembly consists of:
- 28 Chartered Members
- Two Legal Members or Legal Associates
- Two Associate Members
- Six Licentiate Members or Student Members
- One Representative from each English Region (total nine)
- Two Representatives from Wales
- One Representative from Northern Ireland
- One Representative from the Republic of Ireland
- Two Representatives from Scotland
- Any Trustee who is not a member of the General Assembly in another capacity
General Assembly members are asked to express an interest in serving on one of the RTPI’s standing committee’s please see below.

General Assembly meetings are four times a year. Usually in January, March, June and October.
Meetings are held within normal working hours and normally start at 11.00 am.

The Board of Trustees is the elected body responsible for setting the strategic direction of the RTPI’s affairs including responsibility for RTPI’s finances and health and safety.
RTPI being a registered Charity, its trustees must follow the rules and regulations as mentioned in the RTPI’s governing documents; act responsibly and only in the interests of the RTPI; use reasonable care and skill and make well-informed decisions, taking advice when needed.

The Board of Trustees meets six times in a year (including a Board of Trustees Away Day in July).

What are the Standing Committees and how do I apply?
All members of the Board of Trustees will join at least one Standing Committee or Board Sub-Committee.
General Assembly Members will also join at least one Standing Committee or Board Sub-Committee.
Members will be asked to express an interest in serving on a RTPI Standing Committee for 2025 between Monday 7 October and Friday 8 November 2024.
The RTPI Standing Committees are: -

- Education and Lifelong Learning Committee
- Membership & Ethics Committee
- International Committee
- Nations and Regions Panel
We may also ask for expressions of interest if there are vacancies on Board of Trustees Sub-Committees which are:
- Policy, Practice and Research Committee

- Finance Committee
- People and Culture Committee
