What do the RTPI's Standing Committees do?

RTPI members can actively contribute to the work of the Institute by becoming a member of one of our Standing Committees.

The Standing Committees take on responsibilities for specific areas of the Institute’s work, as delegated to them by the Board of Trustees.

Membership and Ethics Committee

The Membership and Ethics Committee leads the work of the RTPI on all forms of professional, technical and non-professional association with the Institute, including classes of membership and the criteria for admission to each class.

Education and Lifelong Learning Committee

The Education and Lifelong Learning Committee leads the work of the RTPI on all aspects of education and lifelong learning. This includes accreditation of planning schools; monitoring of members CPD; community education; policy matters relating to education, training, and qualifications.

England Policy Committee

The England Policy Committee advises the Chief Executive on responses to consultations from the UK Government and other bodies regarding planning in England and also on positions to be taken to any other UK Government activity such as Bills in Parliament, Statutory Instruments etc.  The England Policy Committee develops RTPI policy positions regarding planning in England, if necessary, in advance of legislations and policy pronouncements by the UK Government, suggests ideas for research and practice advice to the Policy Practice and Research Panel and oversees the RTPI’s contribution to planning support and advice to communities and individuals in England.

Please note that members of the England Policy Committee must live or work in England.

International Committee

The RTPI International Committee works to develop and strengthen the Institutes international links and reputation. It monitors all areas of the Institute's activity linked to planning outside the British Isles.  It guides and shapes the Institute's activities in the international planning organisations to which it belongs and fosters good relationships with planning organisations in other countries.

How can I become a member of a RTPI Standing Committee?

All members are eligible to apply.

Applications to become a member of a Standing Committee open in the last quarter of the year for membership for the following calendar year.
