Richard Hammersley

Richard Hammersley BSc MCD PhD CertEd MRTPI(Rtd)

After qualifying in Liverpool in 1969, Richard worked for 8 years in practice with Telford Development Corporation, Derbyshire County Council and Bolsover District Council. He then branched out into academic life with (now) Sheffield Hallam University for 15 years, interspersed with 6 months at QIT in Brisbane, Australia and 6 months back at Derbyshire County Council. In 1991 Richard broke away to become a Senior Academic at (now) Birmingham City University. In this time, he became Course Director for the postgrad and undergrad planning courses - and the MA in Environmental Management (which almost took him off to an alternative career!). He retired from the teaching career in 2005, only to become a Community Planner with West Midlands Planning Aid, where he helped many community groups navigate the planning system.  He later became a Planning Aid volunteer, working on Neighbourhood Planning in the main. He steered the Balsall Heath NDP to approval in 2016 and is now working again on the 3Bs NDP (Perry Barr). He has been a Member of the RTPI since 1972.
