History of World Town Planning Day
Founded in Argentina by Professor Carlos María della Paolera in Buenos Aires in 1949, World Town Planning Day is held on or around 8 November every year. By the time of its golden jubilee in 1999, it was being marked regularly in about 30 countries all over the world including the UK. RTPI Regions now regularly hold WTPD events in early November to celebrate planning and planners.
Since 2009 RTPI and its sister planning organisations around the world have run an international online conference for World Town Planning Day. Co-organisers now include the planning institutes of Australia, South Africa, the USA and Canada with the International Federation for Housing & Planning and the Ibero-American Federation of Planners. These on-line meetings have covered Resilience in a Changing Climate (2009), Healthy People, Healthy Places, Health Planet (2010), Going Public (2011) and Smart Communities Connect (2012). In 2013, the topic was Planning and Water: you can read reports on key sessions from our members and listen to the recordings of each session.
