2013 Membership Survey

At the end of 2013 we conducted a survey of RTPI members to find out how you view your membership. For the first time, the survey provided the Institute with key data on its members (including overseas members), including their salary/income, role, type of employer, location, and their expertise/specialisation.


We listened to your feedback from the last membership survey in 2013 and have:

Influenced policy

  • Campaigned for an increase in planning fees and investment in local planning services
  • Launched the #RTPI16Ways campaign to tackle the housing crisis in England
  • Supported the Great North Plan to drive the Northern Powerhouse
  • Published and promoted manifestos for elections in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom
  • Appeared before parliamentary committees in Westminster and Holyrood
  • Actively engaged with and influenced the review of the Scottish Planning System


Raised our voice to better promote planning and the profession

  • Published the Delivering the Value of Planning report, gaining national media coverage
  • Significantly grown our website and social media audiences
  • Grown the media profile of the Awards for Planning Excellence
  • Launched The Planner magazine and website, now with three regular electronic bulletins
  • Launched our blog to debate the key issues and position the Institute as a thought leader
  • Engaged our stakeholders with regular bulletins on our policy and research work
  • Joined the Homes for Britain and Homes for Wales campaigns to end the housing crisis
  • Worked with other built environment institutes on shared Brexit issues like skills and standards
  • Published, for the first time, Annual Reviews celebrating the Institute's achievements


Promoted the value of planning

  • Held Great Places competitions in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland (England's Great Places won the Best PR campaign at the Association Excellence Awards 2017)
  • Promoted the long-term importance of planning during the Institute's Centenary year, including through the Planning Horizons papers
  • Promoted planning internationally, including through publications such as The Worldwide Value of Planning and Delivering Better Development
  • Engaged with international decision-makers at the UN Habitat III conference and influenced the UN's New Urban Agenda


Shared good practice

  • Increased the membership across our networks
  • Developed the Better Planning programme
  • Increased the interest in the International George Pepler Award, making it more engaging and accessible to young planners


Expanded our events and CPD

  • Increased the number of delegates benefitting from our events, last year 13,903 attended an event put on by our English Regions alone            
  • Grown the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence through increased entries and sponsorship
  • Held the first Northern Ireland Planning Conference
  • Provided free, on demand, online learning and CPD through RTPI Learn


Grown the Institute

  • Increased membership to more than 24,000 for the first time
  • Established new streamlined Routes to Membership and membership classes
  • Launched free membership for all students on RTPI accredited courses
  • Visited schools, colleges and career fairs with the Future Planners programme
  • Secured Future Planner bursaries to support young people studying planning
  • Conducted further research with Students, Licentiates, lapsed members and non-members
  • Promoted greater diversity in the membership
  • And we are developing a new website and customer relationship management (CRM) system to better serve members
