PIPA Conference 2016
19 November - Friends Meeting House, Manchester
Planning powers are devolved within the United Kingdom. But the challenges of delivering housing, infrastructure and enhancing the environment are common challenges faced by decision makers in each of the countries. For the first time, the annual PIPA conference will open up to politicians in all countries of the United Kingdom and Ireland to explore common themes faced by local elected decision makers, to learn from each other and take back with them the tools to help them make the most of their planning decision making powers.

PIPA Conference 2014
The 2014 PIPA Conference at Leicester University in October of the RTPI Centenary Year was another great success with 96% of the delegates that completed feedback forms indicating that the content was either good or excellent. The Conference theme was 'Planning & the Public Interest' but also there was a special exhibition of the 21st Century Garden City entries for the Wolfson Economics Prize. Thanks to continuing support from the Planning Advisory Service (PAS) places were again offered free of charge to local Councillors across England.

PIPA Conference 2013
The PIPA Conference 2013 in England was held in Milton Keynes with Planning Minister Nick Boles as the the keynote speaker.
The theme for the 2013 Conference was 'Planning that meets the needs of current and future generations'. In addition to the Minister's speech other contributions came from a wide range of relevant organisations including the Local Government Association (LGA), the Planning Advisory Service (PAS), the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills and the Planning Officers' Society (POS). Afternoon breakout sessions were chosen by delegates from 12 options ranging from the details on both community and business neighbourhood planning to a look at the Garden City experience in China.

PIPA has held an annual Conference in England since 2007 and a Conference in Scotland in 2008 when the Scottish Parliament was setting up its own planning laws. PIPA has also contributed to Councillor Conferences in Northern Ireland as local government changes have developed and has participated in the Annual RTPI Cymru Conference where Councillor delegates are invited. Details of the 2010 - 2012 Conferences can be seen here.
It is appreciated that PIPA Conferences have been confined largely to English issues. We do not at this time have funding for Conferences in Scotland & Wales but the RTPI offers a number of relevant local events annually. We have previously held a national Conference in Scotland and expect to hold more in Northern Ireland as it prepares for devolving planning responsibilities. We will continue to look for helpful opportunities for events beyond England.
